Who Am I?
I’m an award-winning and bestselling children’s author and I believe it’s important for children to read books that are reflective of their own experiences, as well as other cultures. That’s why I seek to create these opportunities through my books and wider writing.
My self-published picture book series, Daddy Do My Hair kickstarted the whole journey and were inspired by the relationship between my husband and daughters. They are designed to celebrate the special bond between father and child, whilst also showcasing the beauty of Afro textured hair. You’ll notice a recurring theme of hair in my early books and another series of mine that celebrates afro textured hair is the Onyeka series.
The best-selling first book in my debut middle grade series was the Waterstones Book of the Month on publication and a winner of the 2023 Children’s Africana Book Award for Older Readers. It was shortlisted for the 2023 British Book Awards, the Barnes & Noble Children’s and YA Book Awards, the inaugural The Week Junior Book Awards and longlisted for the 2023 Jhalak Prize. The audio book was also named a 2023 ALSC Notable Children’s Recording. The second instalment, Onyeka and the Rise of the Rebels was published in March 2023 and received a coveted starred review from Kirkus. It was also shortlisted for best Audiobook in the 2024 Week Junior Book Awards. The final instalment in the series published in Spring 2024, as well as an additional title, Onyeka and the Secret Superhero, which was a 2024 World Book Day title.
Because I like to keep busy and clearly can’t say no, I also write as part of the dynamic duo, Lola Morayo, with five books in the Aziza’s Secret Fairy Door series, published by Macmillan Children’s Books.
My work has also featured in several anthologies, including Future Hopes and Black Girl Power.
